Welcome to Sports Thoughts Story Time. As a species we humans are at our best when we’re connecting with each other through story-telling. Story telling allows us to share more than the facts: it’s our opportunity to share our feelings, our emotions, our wisdom and our learning with others. Stories allow us to share our successes, our failures, our joys and our fears. Stories help us to learn and grow. This space - Sports Thoughts Story Time is where I’ll share some of the stories I’ve experienced in a lifetime of sport.
This week - That’s the Way We Do It here!
One of the most destructive phrases in sport - or in any field of endeavour is “That’s the way we do it here”.
These seven words have killed off more creativity, more innovation, more potential breakthroughs and more new ideas than anything else in the history of humanity.
Too often, coaches and athletes will come up with new ideas and new ways of doing things, tell someone in their sport about their “Eureka Moment” and that someone will knock them back on their heels with the phrase - “Sorry - that’s the way we do it here”.
The old ways are not always the best ways.
Assuming all that “is” - is better that what “could be” is a great way to stop the sport progressing and being all it - well - could be.
Don’t be afraid to challenge the old ways, to disrupt the current philosophies and to - if necessary - destroy the old myths that are denying your coaches, your athletes and your sport to realize it’s potential.
