Three important messages:
In the last two to three weeks before a big event, change nothing.
Every athlete needs four warm-ups, not one.
There is no Olympic fairy. Performing when and where it matters is built, not granted.
I’m doing some work with Swimming New Zealand at the moment. Part of the brief is to attend their national events, watch coaches in action and turn what I see into learning for others.
At their recent national championships two things jumped out at me. They’re different topics but they’re connected by the same idea, so I want to walk you through both. They apply to every sport, not just swimming.
The first is about the days before a big Event.
The second is about the moments that matter at the Event itself.
